Herbal Pills – How Good for You Are They?

It is true that the treatments modern medicine offers are not perfect. Most of them have side effect that can be felt immediately or that may damage your health slowly and gradually if not taken correctly. This is just one of the reasons why many people prefer to take herbal pills whenever they can. These are considered to be safer as well as extremely effective even when taken only as supplements.

Plants have been used for medication since the dawn of human kind. You can find a plant that can help you get relief from almost any of the most common ailments. Only recently have scientists begun to study these herbs more seriously. They are constantly making surprising discoveries that show the great effectiveness of the substances contained in plants. Most of them actually have more than one beneficial effect on the body and on its organs.

More and more companies have started using herbal extracts for making food supplements. These are also widely used in the cosmetic industry. The pharmaceutical giants are also heavily involved in scientific research studying the effects of the natural plant extracts on the human body.

So far it seems that the herbal pills provide the most effective treatment you can possibly find. However, this is not entirely true. Some of the natural chemical substances extracted from plants are actually tested on animals only. Scientists admit that the effects on humans should be similar, but they cannot confirm this with certainty.

One good example is resveratrol. There is a huge hype about its anti-aging and anti-cancer qualities. However, most of the tests performed with this substance use only mice as the subjects. It also turns out that you need to take impossibly large quantities of resveratrol in order for it to protect you from cancer.

The herbal pills are effective to an extent, but they are not at all as powerful as they are presented in the advertisements. Another huge problem with the so called natural medications is that not all of them are produced in line with hygiene standards. Several studies have revealed that a large number of products actually contain contaminants such as animal feces and toxins. These can seriously endanger a person’s health.

It can be concluded that the use of herbal supplements and pills is beneficial as long as you use approved products coming from a reputable manufacturer. Still, it is better for you to use them to complement your treatment rather than as a replacement to your main medications.
